Former England striker Wayne Rooney has been singing the praises of Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, labeling him as the "future captain" of the Three Lions. Despite struggling to find his footing since his summer move from Sporting, Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres has been praised by Rooney for his overall contribution to the team. Gyokeres' emphatic penalty against Everton was his seventh goal in all competitions this season, and his first since November.
Rooney feels that Gyokeres should not be judged solely on his goal-scoring record, as he occupies the center-backs and creates space for other players. The Sweden international's ability to do the dirty work and create opportunities for his teammates has been invaluable to Arsenal.
"He does a bit more than what you see," Rooney said. "He occupies the two center-backs, which creates a bit more space for your number 10 or your wide players who are coming inside. I think he's important for Arsenal, he's doing a job which helps other players."
