'Incredible' Rice is 'future captain of England' - Rooney

England's Future Captain: Wayne Rooney Hails Declan Rice as the Ideal Successor

Former England striker Wayne Rooney has been singing the praises of Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, labeling him as the "future captain" of the Three Lions. Rooney's endorsement comes after witnessing Rice's impressive performance in Arsenal's 1-0 victory over Everton, which propelled the Gunners back to the top of the Premier League.

Rice, who has already earned 72 caps for England, has demonstrated his leadership skills by wearing the armband on two occasions in the absence of current captain Harry Kane. Rooney, who captained England from 2014 to 2017, believes that Rice is the perfect candidate to take over the reins when Kane decides to hang up his boots.

"For me, he's the one who's probably waiting for Harry to hang up his boots at some point," Rooney said in an interview. "He was all over the pitch, his decision-making was impeccable, and his detail on his passes was a pleasure to watch. He was absolutely incredible."

Rice's versatility and work rate have been particularly impressive, with the midfielder often finding himself in various positions on the pitch. His ability to split center-backs, take the ball off Arsenal's defenders, and act as a third center-back has been a key factor in the team's success. Rooney also praised Rice's personality and drive, stating that he is irreplaceable for England.

Calvert-Lewin's World Cup Hopes

Rooney also shared his thoughts on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, his former Everton teammate, who has been in fine form for Leeds United. Calvert-Lewin has scored in each of his last five outings, including a brace in Saturday's 4-1 win over Crystal Palace. Rooney believes that the striker could still force his way into Thomas Tuchel's squad for the World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

"If he continues this form, then there's no reason why he shouldn't be talked about or even get an opportunity to go to the World Cup," Rooney said. "He's still quite young, and he's still got a bit left in him. You forget how good a player he is."

Gyokeres' Importance to Arsenal

Despite struggling to find his footing since his summer move from Sporting, Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres has been praised by Rooney for his overall contribution to the team. Gyokeres' emphatic penalty against Everton was his seventh goal in all competitions this season, and his first since November.

Rooney feels that Gyokeres should not be judged solely on his goal-scoring record, as he occupies the center-backs and creates space for other players. The Sweden international's ability to do the dirty work and create opportunities for his teammates has been invaluable to Arsenal.

"He does a bit more than what you see," Rooney said. "He occupies the two center-backs, which creates a bit more space for your number 10 or your wide players who are coming inside. I think he's important for Arsenal, he's doing a job which helps other players."

As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how Rice, Calvert-Lewin, and Gyokeres continue to perform and whether they can make a significant impact on the international stage. One thing is certain, however: Rooney's endorsement of Rice as the future captain of England is a testament to the midfielder's exceptional talent and leadership abilities.
